Dawn Smith and Paul Ross first opened "Lingfield" as a small private nursery in their house in Blackheath in 1990 following successful careers in different parts of advertising. As is often the case this followed the start of their own family and the conviction that they could do better than the local competition (then very limited!). They remain, along with their daughter Jennifer, very much involved in the day to day running of both Lingfield Nurseries from their office at the Blackheath site.

Since opening the nursery has doubled in size to thirty and a second nursery was developed in 1997 in Baring Road, Grove Park SE12. The ethos has remained very much the same in striving to supply quality childcare and education to children aged 18 months to 5 years in a safe and homely environment. Both nurseries are located in private houses and have been sympathetically converted for childcare and allow plenty of access to secluded private gardens at the rear. They are registered by OFSTED, in The Good Nursery Guide and are accredited by the Pre School Learning Alliance.
